This year, we’ve received a particularly high number of requests to capture secret marriage proposals, so I felt the time had come to devote a brief analysis to this topic here on MoksaPhoto as well. It’s a valid question: is this really necessary? Isn’t it enough for the couple to simply experience the moment and be done with it?
A marriage proposal is a well-considered decision made before saying “I do,” a formal declaration, and a very serious commitment. Perhaps the idea has been maturing inside you for months or even years; you’ve been planning to do it, and now the time has come. It depends on one’s individuality and personality how much energy and creativity each person invests in this, but one thing is certain: the love of our life will appreciate it when they see the effort and the sincere intention. This also shows the other person that they’re so important to us that we’d spend a lifetime with them, and it gives us feedback on whether our partner feels the same way about us.
I’m sure you’ve been asked before how you met your partner. How did you propose? Ideally, you have an interesting story to tell and some memories associated with it—but nothing more. In today’s world, it’s common for almost everything to be captured in photos or videos, but what’s the problem with that? For one thing, when you’re busy fiddling with your camera or adjusting your selfie stick, it’s impossible to be fully present in the moment. This is one of the reasons why it’s not a good idea for someone to be constantly on their phone, for example, during a wedding. Not only can it distract the photographers and videographers working there, but the person will primarily be focused on making sure the shot turns out well. What’s happening in the moment becomes secondary. And a marriage proposal is precisely the kind of event where being fully present is especially important.
What if we want more than that? What if there were something even more lasting than fading memories? What if there were a photo or even a video of the engagement that even our grandchildren could see? It might also be interesting to see how an outsider perceived us at the time. These recordings, just like a good song or a scent, can instantly bring back the feelings we experienced there, even years later—provided we were truly present in the moment.
